Bring Your Earplugs

Bali, as described in the travel brochures, may seem like an idyllic tropical paradise where you can relax and have a peaceful time. In fact, in most locations, you’ll be hard pressed to find the peace and quiet that you imagine. Bali is home to 3 million people and it seems each and every one of them has a motorbike. A large percentage of them also own a chicken or three. Add to that the noise of insects and birds, crashing waves and the throb of Kuta’s night life and you will find that finding silence is extremely difficult.

So at nights you will likely find yourself within earshot of a local disco, or near a busy road, and in the morning you’d better be prepared for chickens/roosters sounding the alarm from 5.30am onwards together with dogs barking, birds chirping and insects singing at the warmth of morning.

Of course, after 2-3 weeks, you’ll start to tune out some of the roosters, and some of the birds and insect sounds could be described as beautiful, but still best to put in your earplugs before going to bed if you intend sleeping beyond 7am. After a while you will feel that going to bed soon after the sun sets is probably a good idea.
