Lovina and the North Coast

Dolphin Watching

You will find the town of Lovina on most of the tourist maps and you can even get bus tickets from Kuta, however, at the time of writing, Google Maps and other electronic versions have never heard of it, so if you’re driving it will be a challenge.

You will know when you’ve arrived in Lovina by just looking at signs of hotels and restaurants which proudly proclaim they’re in Lovina.

Lovina is on the map for one basic reason, 20 years ago, a local fisherman noticed that the bay was home to many families of wild dolphin. He of course, started a business taking tourists out in a small fishing boat very early in the morning to photograph the beautiful creatures in their natural habitat.

Fast forward to 2013 and now at 6am every morning, 50 or more small boats go out ever further into the bay to pretty much chase the dolphins around with tourists happily snapping their photos.

Having said that, it is a nice experience for us tourists and I’m sure the dolphins would rather be being chased by boats for a few hours than being a prisoner in some zoo being forced to do tricks every day.
